Choosing The Right Kennel For Your Dog

Choosing the best kennel for your dog is a big decision. If you’re overwhelmed by the choice of dog crates and kennels – read on for our top tips on choosing the best kennel for your dog.

What Size Kennel Should I Get for My Dog?

Dogs come in many different shapes and sizes, and there’s a dog kennel to suit each one. Whatever design or material you select – ensuring you get the correct size for your dog is the first step. The basic rule of thumb is that your dog should have enough space to be able to walk into the kennel, turn around, and have up to four inches of extra head space when standing up. While you may be tempted to get your dog a kennel that is big and spacious – this is not a good idea. If the kennel is too big, your dog won’t be able to insulate and stay warm during the colder months. Also – your dog may decide to use the extra space as a toilet area. If your dog is still a puppy – estimate his adult weight, and purchase the kennel that will fit when he’s fully grown.

Kennel Material

Kennels come in a variety of materials, including wood, hard plastic, and wire. If your dog is a chewer you’ll want a solid kennel made from a good, hard material – either wood, or hard plastic. Check out our Wooden Dog Kennel - Superior Flat Roof Kennel with Door. Available in three sizes, it’s easy to assemble with only a screwdriver, and features a hinged roof and removable base for easy cleaning, adjustable feet for uneven surfaces, and durable, weather-resistant wood.

Travel Kennels & Dog Crates

For travelling with your dog – whether you’re taking him along on the family holiday, or making the dreaded trip to the vet – you might want a portable crate, a plastic crate like the Doggit Voyageur is perfect.

Dog Cushions

Once you've selected the best kennel for your dog, you can increase his comfort level with a warm and cosy cushion – just remember to select one that is machine-washable for easy maintenance.
